Lean In

joybrownridge

Lean in. Building on the idea of intentionally seeking out things that bring us bliss, I want to talk about leaning in. By this, I mean taking the time to intentionally seek out books, films, and people who embody the kind of happiness mindset you want on a more regular basis.

When we think about nature versus nurture, we often feel that our general nature is simply fixed. But that view overlooks the fact that we can do quite a bit to nurture the mindset and overall disposition we desire. When life’s circumstances make us feel sad or downcast, we can purposefully choose things that will counteract those feelings and give us a boost. Of course, this requires some intentionality. Even if you don’t feel like reading positive books or watching uplifting films, a part of you needs to recognize that making the effort—even when you don’t want to—will yield worthwhile results in the long run.

Beyond making this intentional effort, we must also stay consistent and be in it for the long haul. You can read one positive book and get a temporary boost from it, but if you stop there, the results will not last as long. Our brains need ongoing positive reinforcement if we are to overcome our current circumstances.

Leaning in will not solve all of your problems; that’s not the point I’m trying to make. But I am saying that leaning in, being intentional, and staying consistent will greatly enhance almost anyone’s state of mind and overall well-being. Let's all give it a try.
